Move towards zero fossil-based plastic packaging

Background

This initiative that we are looking at is very focused towards our banana program. In the entire value chain of banana production, there is the usage of plastic (Single-use and recyclable) at various stages. Some examples may include Tree bags, SokSok, monorope in the farms and the usage of Vacuum packs, Labels & Consumer Packs in the market side.

We are currently targeting solutions to eradicate/reduce the use of fossil fuel based plastic packaging in our market side. The first target areas we want to address are the use of

  • Consumer Packaging
  • Vacuum Pack Polytubes
  • Tapes
  • Labels
  • Stickers
  • Strap Packs
  • TQC Liner
  • Foams

Together they account for about 99% of plastic consumption on the market/consumer end.

Requirements

  • BRANDING - Packaging for Product Information/Label FunctionTechnologies that can secure product information in fresh banana up to the end of shelf life. Including but not limited to adhesive stickers, tapes, non-fossil based plastics, fruit tattoo, laser fruit print, thermo-graphics fruit etching, smart paper, micro-chips, and QR label.
  • PRODUCT PROTECTION - Technologies that can secure product’s quality and integrity up to the end of shelf life. Protection against physical, physiological and biological pressures like bruising, untimely respiration and ethylene production and microbiological contamination.Products and technologies Including but not limited to non fossil based plastics , bio-degradable and edible coating, shelf life tapes, MA kraft bags, micro-perforated sheets, paper separator, micronized silver spray and nano fruit coatings.

Desired Outcome

  • The potential markets that would be impacted by this solution are:
    • Japan
    • Korea
    • China
    • Singapore
  • Other Asian Markets
  • We are happy to provide mentorship, and a potential pilot if the solution is suitable

Development Timeframe

  • Product is needed today, which means we are happy to work with startups at any stage of maturity, but we would love “ready-to-market” solutions
